The Stockbridge Lady Panther soccer team shut out a determined Onsted opponent on Tuesday, March 27 by a score of 3-0. Despite the cold wind and rain the Panthers pressed Onsted early with accurate downfield passing to allow Faith Whitt to score her first center field goal just three minutes into the match from 35 yards out. The early goal fired up the Onsted team who pressed the ball mostly on the Stockbridge side of the field for the next five minutes. Even so, the Stockbridge defensive line proved too strong during each of Onsted’s attempts to threaten the goal. At the ten minute mark a well placed mid field pass to Faith Whitt gave her the opportunity to maneuver through the center of the Onsted defenders and score a second goal from 30 yards. During most of the remainder of the first half Stockbridge tested Onsted’s defense forcing their goal keeper to make five saves.
Stockbridge kept the ball on the Onsted side of the field during most of the second half. When Onsted was able to break toward the Stockbridge goal the Panther defense repelled each attempt. At 15 minutes into the second half Faith Whitt scored her third goal of the match on a well-placed shot 35 yards out from the right corner. The Wildcats responded with a strong offensive effort that looked to be a certain goal until Baylee Heidrich showed her speed and turned the ball just 18 yards from the Panther goal. The Onsted team continued to play hard, but the skill of both the veteran and many new Panther players wore Onsted down and held them scoreless. Bethany Plennert completed two well executed saves at goal keeper to help deliver a 3-0 shutout for the Panthers first regular season victory.
The Panthers are in action again on Thursday at Home when they play host to the Ramblers of Perry in the GLAC league open. The game will start at 5:30.
